About

We are a specialist multi-disciplinary mental healthcare practice with a focus on providing evidence-based psychological treatments for posttraumatic stress and a range of anxiety problems. We cater to armed forces and public safety personnel, as well as to members of the general public.

Our goal is to improve access to the best-researched treatments for PTSD and anxiety, both by offering them directly to consumers and by assisting other professionals, through training, supervision, and consultation, to do the same.

TREATMENT

We provide evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy for a range of anxiety and trauma-related disorders including Posttraumatic Stress (PTSD), Panic, Social Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety, worry, and Specific Phobias (e.g., of flying, heights, animals, medical procedures, or vomiting). We also offer specialized treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), depression, insomnia, and Body-Focussed Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) such as trichotillomania and skin picking.

Our primary treatments for these problems are cognitive-behavioural (CBTs). CBTs are the most thoroughly and stringently researched psychotherapies with the strongest empirical evidence of effectiveness. Examples include Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) for PTSD; Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) for OCD; Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I); Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for BFRBs and tics; and a variety of exposure-based and cognitive interventions for anxiety and depression.

Treatment is available in person at our offices in Edmonton, Alberta, as well as remotely throughout Alberta and the Northwest Territories using PIPEDA-compliant encrypted videoconferencing.

Assessment

Thorough diagnostic evaluation is a routine part of the treatment process at CPSAT. Its function is to generate treatment recommendations that are tailored to the individual needs of the client. We also offer psychological assessment and testing for other purposes, including insurance and medical legal casework and applications for benefits and services from Veterans Affairs Canada.

Consultation & training

We provide expert consultation, supervision, and training in the use of Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD. Services range from ad hoc consultation on PE cases with a certified PE Supervisor to full certification as a PE Therapist from the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA) at the University of Pennsylvania, where PE was developed. We also offer CTSA-approved four-day training workshops in Prolonged Exposure Therapy.

The Centre for Posttraumatic Stress & Anxiety Treatment Ltd. is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. The Centre for Posttraumatic Stress & Anxiety Treatment Ltd. maintains responsibility for the program.
